History of Bromley Cricket Club

Bromley is an ancient cradle of the game of cricket, and although the first mention of a Bromley team taking the field was in 1742, a club is said to have emerged around 1820. However, it's exsistance has been continuous only since 1856, when it was revived by Joseph Wells, father of 'H.G' and subsequently to become the first man to take four wickets in four consecutive balls in first class cricket.

The club then had thirty years on the White Hart Field, today felicitously preserved as Queen's Gardens amidst The Glades shopping precinct. In 1886 the Club moved to it's present eight acre ground at Plaistow Lane and a year later the tennis section was started. In 1973 it became the first club in Bromley to provide hard tennis courts. The 150th anniversary of the founding of the club was celebrated in style in 1970 when a commemorative history was produced. This interesting book is still available from the bar, and even today makes good reading.

In 1975 three squash courts were officially opened by the British Open Champion, Jonah Barrington, and the pavillion refurbished to a high standard. A balcony was added in 1994 and improved in 1996, affording a delightful view over the ground.
The Cricket first XI has been one of the top three clubs for many years and competes in the premier league. The Colts teams are a highlight of the Club, with excellent performances over many seasons.

A large number of tennis teams compete at National and County league level, and there are active Midweek, Junior and Mini Tennis sections. It is also one of the few clubs in the area to maintain six grass courts for summer play.

There is a strong non-playing membership membership offering spectator facilities and use of the excellent clubhouse bar and catering facilities, as well as the full social events programme. A Bridge Club and an Aerobics Class were introduced in 1990.

Bromley Cricket Club is a major Bromley private members' multi-sports Club providing excellent facilities for playing members of all sections and standards.
